Abiy Ahmed’s “Election” is a Political Crime

Abiy Ahmed insists on staging this farce he labels an "election"—even as the country is torn apart by civil war, as every major political party refuses to participate, as the institutional framework—including his handpicked election board—remains unchanged, with parliamentary seats already apportioned before any ballot is cast, and as the public has made unequivocally clear that a forced election is neither their will nor their priority. Moreover, no credible observer—domestic or international—will be present. Every sign on the wall has warned against this folly which Abiy Ahmed wilfully ignored.

Under these conditions, the so-called "election" he is pressing ahead is not merely a sham, it is a political crime. A crime committed against our people, paid for with their own meagre and dwindling resources.

The OLA will not sit idly by while Abiy Ahmed mocks our people, squanders our collective wealth, while our people's blood runs in the streets. Therefore, effective immediately, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) declares a total ban on all transport and movement across Oromia until June 4. No vehicles or commercial traffic is allowed. No unauthorized travel of any kind. The sole exception shall be designated ambulances operating under explicit humanitarian protocols. Any breach of this ban will be met with immediate and decisive consequences.

We further advise all members of the diplomatic corps currently in the capital to suspend, without exception, any travel to or within Oromia for the duration of this week.

UPDATE — DAY 2 OF OPERATION EGEREE OROMIYAA

Two days after the declaration of Operation Egeree Oromiyaa, the OLA has continued to struck decisively against Abiy’s forces deployed to challenge OLA. 


1. Western Command struck in Boojjii Coqorsaa, overrunning the regime’s military camp in Coqorsaa town. The toll: 68 regime soldiers killed, 78 wounded.


2. West Harargee Zone — In Daaroo Labu, at the Amsiisoo military camp, 7 killed and scores wounded. A simultaneous operation in Habroo District’s Daraartuu town saw OLA fighters seize scores of election ballot boxes that were being transported by regime soldiers.


3. West Harargee’s Hancaar district — 10 killed, 12 wounded, weapons confiscated. Similar action was carried out in Illu Abbaa Booraa’s Algee Saachii.


4. Northern Command struck in Wolloo, Harxummaa Fursee, at Raasaa Harruuqqee Qotiitii — 18 killed, 23 wounded. OLA forces then drove the remnants of regime forces out of Faallee and Kurfaa, pushing them back to Qiciicoo town.


5. OLA forces liberated civilians held captive in dire conditions in Suroo Bargudda (West Guji). Among those freed were mostly mothers — imprisoned for the simple crime of refusing to take regime election cards or for refusing to denounce the OLA..

Under blockade, Abiy Ahmed now resorts to helicopters for the remaining transport of election papers. Beyond what had already been delivered, the military is pre-filling ballot boxes with papers taken from Woreda Party offices — all well ahead of the so-called “election” date.

UPDATE — DAY 3 OF OPERATION EGEREE OROMIYAA

Three days into the declaration of Operation Egeree Oromiyaa, the OLA continues to strike Abiy Ahmed’s forces deployed to disrupt the blockade. What was meant to be a show of regime strength has instead become a portrait of its collapse across Oromia.

1. Madda Albuudaa Command, operations in Aagaa Waayyuu and Malkaa districts of southern Oromia left 56 regime soldiers dead, 69 wounded, and a significant number taken as prisoners of war. Simultaneous strikes in Sassiggaa and Comman Guduruu districts in western Oromia have further shattered regime lines.

2. Harsadee Command forces struck in Dugdaa (East Shewa) and Ziwaay Dugdaa (East Arsii), eliminating 71 enemy combatants, wounding 35, and capturing 21.

3. In West Harargee’s Gumbii Bordoddee district, an OLA operation killed 5 regime soldiers, wounded 7, and resulted in the confiscation of military equipment.

4. East Arsii witnessed coordinated action in Leemmuu and Bulbuloo districts. In Mararoo town, OLA fighters overran the police station—killing seven, including the district’s notorious criminal investigator known as Gammachuu. Scores more were wounded. The people watched, and they did not flinch.

5. In Dagam district, North Shaggar, an assault on Abiy’s forces produced 31 dead and 37 wounded. Entire convoys were destroyed. The road to Shaggar now belongs to no one but the resistance.

6. Another operation in East Arsii targeted three military camps in Asakoo and Dhalataa Caffaa town. Fifteen soldiers were killed, 18 wounded. The camps fell. Then the town fell. Then the silence of regime authority was replaced by OLA control.

Main roads remain under blockade. Supply lines are severed. Movement is a privilege Abiy’s forces no longer possess.

And as ballots were pre-filled yesterday and in the days before, Abiy Ahmed prepares to declare a nonexistent victory after a nonexistent election.

End of the Blockade in Oromia

Following six days of sustained action, the Oromo Liberation Army’s Operation Egeree Oromia has achieved its objectives in full. The aims of the blockade were twofold:

First, to disrupt the regime’s ability to fake the performative election smoothly by severing the movement of personnel, materials, and pre-marked ballots upon which its theatrical elections depend.

Second, to lay bare, in real time, the vast expanse of Oromia that lies outside the regime’s administrative or military control.

Both objectives have been achieved.

Abiy Ahmed has been forced to fabricate mathematically impossible turnout numbers, and to peddle socially grotesque fictions—such as mourners queuing to vote instead of burying their dead. The regime could not hoodwink its own cadres, let alone the Oromo people or the international community. Its claim to electoral legitimacy was already a foregone conclusion before any blockade; the blockade merely made the pretence unsustainable and unattainable.

The blockade is, therefore, lifted, effective tomorrow morning. Our struggle continues until our people truly elect their government.

ባለፉት በርካታ ዓመታት በአርሲ--አሳኩ አካባቢን ጨምሮ--የአብይ አህመድ የካድሬ ኔትወርክ በማህበረሰቡ መካከል ክፍፍልን ለመፍጠር ሲሰራ ቆይተዋል። ኦሮሞዎችን በአማራዎች ላይ፣ ሙስሊሞችን ደግሞ በክርስቲያኖች ላይ ለማነሳሳት ያልፈነቀሉት ድንጋይ አልነበረም። በኦሮሞ ህዝብ ውስጥም እንኯን ክርስቲያን ቱላማ ኦሮሞን በሙስሊም ኦሮሞ ወንድሞቻቸው ላይ ለማነሳሳት ሞክረዋል። ይህንኑ ለመተግበር ሌላውን በማግለል ጠመንጃ በተወሰነ ቡድን እጅ ��ንዲገባ ኣድርገዋል። የብልጽግና ፓርቲ በግልጽ የአንድ ማህበረሰብ ብቻ እንደሆነ አድርጎ ትርክት ለመስራትም ጥረዋል። ይህ ማህበረሰቡን የመሸርሽር ሴራ ለዓመታት የደከሙበት ጉዳይ ነው።

ባሳለፍነው ሰኞ (May 31, 2026) የOLA ኃይሎች በመላው ኦሮሚያ የተጣለውን እገዳ ለማስፈጸም ሲንቀሳቀሱ፣ የአብይ አህመድ ካድሬዎች እድሉን ተጠቀሙበት። ለዓመታት የነዙትን የጎሳ እና የሃይማኖት ቅስቀሳ በመጠቀም፣ በኣከባቢው ያሉ የአገዛዝ ባለስልጣናት የማህበረሰብ ግጭትን በንቃት አቀጣጠሉ። ከዚያ የተነሳ የንጹሃን ህይወት በከንቱ እንዲጠፋ አድርገዋል። የተለመደው የዐቢይ አህመድ የድንቁርና ተግባር ነው።

ዛሬ፣ በመላ አገሪቱ ያሉ ተቃዋሚ ኃይሎች የጎንዮሽ ግጭቶችን ውድቅ ማድረጋቸው ብቻ፣ በአብይ አህመድ የሽብር አገዛዝ ላይ ምንም አይነት የተቀናጀ እርምጃ ሳይወሰድም፣ ዐቢይ አህመድ ህዝቦችን የሚከፋፍልበት ምክንያት እያጣ መሆኑን እያወቀ ነው። የኦሮሚያ ክልል አስተዳደር ተብዬ ፡ የኦሮሞ ኣባጋዳዎችን በቀጥታ ኣስገድሎ በOLA ላይ ስያላክክ በዓለም አቀፍ ሚዲያዎች ጭምር ተይዞም የማይማረው የድንኮች ስብስብ፣ አ��ን ደግሞ “ምርጫችንን ለማደናቀፍ የተሰማሩት ኃይሎች ቤተክርስቲያንን ኢላማ አደረጉ” በማለት ልክ አብያተ ክርስቲያናት የምርጫ ማጭበርበር ቦታዎች የሆኑ አስመስሎ ተሳልቀዋል።

ከጅምሩ፣ አቢይ አህመድ በ2018 ከOLA ጋር የተጀመረውን የሰላም ሂደቱን ሲያዛባ ሁለት ግቦች ነበሩት። አንደኛ፣ በኦሮሚያ ውስጥ ማንኛውንም የፖለቲካ ተቃዋሚ ለመጨፍለቅ OLA በጫካ መቀጠል እንደ ምክንያት ለመጠቀም ነበር። በግዜው በግልጽ “ህወሃት በትግራይ ውስጥ የፖለቲካ ህይወትን ሙሉ በሙሉ በመቆጣጠር ለ27 ዓመታት ገዝቷል። በኦሮሚያም እንዲሁ እናደርጋለን” ሲል ነበር። ሁለተኛው ዓላማ OLAን በአማራ ላይ እንደ ምናባዊ ጠላት አድርጎ መጠቀም ነበር። የሄንንም ዐቢይ አህመድ በዝግ ሲለው ነበር ፣ “አማራው ካልተንበረከከ፣ ይቃጠላታል፤ እና OLAን እንደ አማራጭ እንደሚመርጡ እናሳያቸዋለን።”

ከአማራ እና ከሌሎች ኃይሎች ጋር የፖለቲካ ልዩነቶች አሉን። ይህ ጤናማ እና ተፈጥሯዊ ነው። ይቀጥላ��ም። ነገር ግን ለረጅም ጊዜ፣ አንድ ቦዘኔ አማሮችን እንዲገድል እና ኦሮሞዎችን እንዲወቅስ፣ ኦሮሞዎችን እንዲገድል እና አማሮችን እንዲወቅስ፣ የመከፋፈል ትርክቶቹን ተራ በተራ እየገዛንለት፣ በመሃከል የኣያሌ ንጹሃንን መቀጠፍ ስንፈቅ፣ ስናስችል ኖረናል። ያ ዘመን አልፏል። ለወደፊቱም እን��ይሳካ በትጋት መሰራት ኣለበት። የፖለቲካ ልዩነቶች ምንም ይሁኑ ምን፣ ሁላችንም በሰው ልጅ ሕይወት ክቡርነት እና ልዕልና ላይ የጋራ ስምምነት አለን።

Another Round of Massacre in Arsi

Over the past several years, in Arsi—including the Asakoo area—Abiy Ahmed's forces and his network of cadres have systematically fomented division among the people. They have set Oromos against Amharas, Muslims against Christians. And within the Oromo people themselves, they have sought to turn Christian Tulama Oromo against their Muslim Oromo brothers. To effectuate division, weapons have been placed in the hands of one group over another. The Prosperity Party openly pretends as though it belongs to one community at the expense of all others. This machinery of distrust has churned for years.

Then came June 31, 2026. As OLA forces mobilized across Oromia to enforce a blockade against the sham election, Abiy Ahmed's cadres seized the opportunity. Capitalizing on years of engineered ethnic and religious incitement, regime operatives in the region actively ignited and abetted communal violence. It was in the bloodshed that followed that civilian lives were lost. It’s the typical signature Abiy Ahmed move.

Today, the mere fact that opposition forces across the country have rejected horizontal quarrels, even without any united action against Abiy Ahmed's reign of terror, the regime finds itself running out of reasons to divide people. The Oromia state administration—already caught red-handed by international media, directly ordering the killing of Oromo Gada elders and blaming it on the OLA—now claims that "the forces deployed to challenge our election targeted the church," as if churches were ever sites of electoral fraud.

From the very beginning, Abiy Ahmed had two goals when he derailed the peace process with the OLA in 2018. First, to use the idea of “OLA in the bush” as a scapegoat to crush any political opposition in Oromia. He has said openly: "The TPLF ruled for 27 years by totally controlling political life in Tigray. We will do the same in Oromia." The second aim was to wield the OLA as a phantom enemy against the Amhara. Behind closed doors, he has admitted: "If the Amhara do not kneel, I will attack them and show them whether they prefer the OLA as an alternative to me."

We have many political differences with the Amhara and other forces. That is healthy and natural, and differences will continue. But for far too long, we have allowed Abiy Ahmed to kill Amharas and blame Oromos; to kill Oromos and blame Amharas—while we gobbled divisive narratives. That era is over. Going forward, it will not succeed. Whatever political differences, we all have shared agreement on the sanctity of human life.
