Texan here, I can confirm. The connotation really has to be there, and you can tell when they're just saying boy to say boy, but in the right tone of voice you can hear the racism loud and clear

That’s mostly a southern thing you find in places like Louisiana and Texas and stuff. Saying “boy” on its own isn’t racist, but saying it in a certain tone or connotation is basically like saying “hey I didn’t say the other word but I still mean it”
