I have to say @miketirico is the best of the best. The way he wrapped up the @TeamUSA hockey coverage describing what sports means to our country and how it brings us together, got me choked up🥲His words, his tone, his passion for what he does...Perfect ending to a GREAT Olympics🇺🇸
There are a number of things about this offseason that are frustrating. Let's see if I can spell them out.
1) They publicly and privately sold this plan of long-term deals for their stars. Hendrickson always seemed the lowest priority, but what a miserable start to the plan.
2) They've tried to draft heavy on defense for aging free agents and have not hit/developed those picks even close to well enough. Instead of paying their good players, they've failed to replace them with financial and draft investments. Now they're bereft of top-end talent on defense, barring development.
3) They're coming off another dreadful offseason where they failed to make additions to get the team back on track in 2024. I've asked "if not now, when?" And we've spelled out the financials that can work. The Bengals just decided it's too expensive for their valuation, so Trey can explore his market.
4) It's hard to figure out how the team is getting better. They desperately need to get back to contending status in 2025. It's exhausting to watch them drag their feet in negotiations time and time again and take half-steps. They had an opportunity to execute a plan this offseason, and now it gets much harder.
ETA 5) They could have avoided all of this by being proactive. Their risk aversion to getting ahead of the market costs them SO MANY assets. They've been taught the lesson so many times. And yet they consistently wait until the last possible second and set picks and money on fire in the process.
Maybe Trey ends up coming back after all of this and they find common ground. Maybe the trade compensation is great and they nail the draft and free agency. But why would anyone trust them right now after the last 2 years?
Look Trey is a portion of the tipping point (a collapse in Tee negotiations will send me over the edge). While Trey is an absolute freak and I want him here, this anger is not necessarily about him.
It is about…
Whitworth
Atkins
Bates
Etc….
It’s consistent frustration.

Until the narrative changes from
“We believe in the guys we have to execute our gameplan” to “we’re going to gameplan around our players strengths”, this is the product you’re going to see. Good coaches know the talent they have and cater to them instead of them catering to you.
