@HannahLebovits I 100% understand that people self-describe & I don’t argue with how people do so. For those of us who care for/provide resources to and/or write about those communities I’m arguing that using the most dignified & non-essentializing language decreases the potential for stigma.

@HannahLebovits I agree that there is a subset of the drug use population facing extreme and chaotic consequences of unregulated drug use. But even the paradigmatic framework of “addiction” can invite bias and stigma into the conversation, and papers over many individual experiential nuances.

@HannahLebovits Using drugs isn’t necessarily self-harm, in fact, it may be the balm to self-harm: deciding to relieve one’s own suffering is a deeply human and humane impulse that can be the path to “recovery” or healing, however one conceives of these concepts for themselves.

@tom_rando @BrynnTannehill Because that is how fascists use laws before they run out of legislative & juridical methods to make their targets’ lives impossible. Prosecuting political opponents for crimes they may have committed, even if it’s purely retribution, is still within the framework of democracy.
