14 years ago today, I was laying in an urgent care, fighting to breathe through severe swelling. When the doctor said he was calling an ambulance, I pulled the oxygen mask off of my face and said “No, you can’t, I don’t have insurance.”

I remember it so vividly.

I was more afraid of the cost than of how hard it was to breathe.

I was about to have insurance for the first time as an adult, thanks to the ACA, but coverage didn’t start for another week and I needed care right then.
