"Hurt" is not an original by Johnny Cash. The song was written by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) in 1994 for the album The Downward Spiral. Rick Rubin had to insist several times on Cash recording his version, at first Johnny found the idea completely insane because the original version is industrial and noisy. At 71, already very ill, almost blind and with trembling hands, Cash completely transformed the band.
The iconic video, directed by Mark Romanek, was filmed at the House of Cash (his own museum). June Carter Cash appears looking at him fondly, the video was shot in February 2003, a few months before she died (May) and Johnny himself (September).
Trent Reznor was so moved that he declared, "This song is not mine anymore." It is considered one of the best covers of all time.
Bassist Tim Commerford confessed that at first he thought "Like a Stone" was a romantic song and only understood the real meaning when Cornell explained it! It was the second single from Audioslave's debut album and became the band's biggest hit: #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts, #31 on the Hot 100 and is, to date, the most streamed track of Chris Cornell's entire career (over 1 billion plays on Spotify).
The video, directed by Meiert Avis, was shot at Jimi Hendrix's former mansion in Los Angeles, the same place where Hendrix composed "Purple Haze"!
"Fast Car" was a worldwide success after Tracy Chapman's unexpected performance in Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Tribute (Wembley Stadium, 1988). She had already played her normal set, but when Stevie Wonder had a technical problem with the equipment, the organizers called her at the last minute to fill the time. She returned to the stage with only guitar and sang "Fast Car" to millions of live viewers, which was the moment that launched her international career.
Baccara was a Spanish duo (Mayte Mateos and María Mendiola) who worked as dancers/singers in a hotel in the Canary Islands. German producer Ralf Siegel heard them singing and composed "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" especially for them in 1977. It was the first single of their career, #1 in the United Kingdom (first Spanish artist to achieve this), #1 in several European countries and sold more than 16 million copies worldwide.
Alien Ant Farm recorded Smooth Criminal without intending to release the track. The label liked the track so much that it made it the first single from the album Anthology (2001). It was a huge success: it reached #1 on the American alternative rock chart, sold over 1 million copies in the US alone and became the band's biggest hit. Michael Jackson loved the version so much that he personally called to congratulate the guys.
Was bin ich froh, dass ich erst zur Punktevergabe eingeschaltet habe. Der Siegersong ist Gangnam Style von Temu und geht einem schon nach 10 Sekunden auf den Sack. Waren die anderen Songs auch so schlimm? #ESC2026
