In the opening of Scarface, Tony says his father “was a Yankee.” According to Steven Bauer, who played Manny, that detail is actually true and a key part of Tony’s backstory – and it explains a lot about Al Pacino’s often‑criticized accent in the film. Bauer explains…
“Nobody remembers this, but Tony isn’t entirely Cuban anyway. In the interrogation room he says his father was ‘a Yankee.’ So that’s part of it. He says his father took him to the movies growing up, that’s how he learned English.
That’s a layer that Al was able to use, and use it to take the liberty of creating his own Cuban accent based on all the information he was getting. And be consistent about it, because it’s consistent throughout the fucking film. He never wavers. He never falls out of that thing. Why, though? Because every single day, that’s how we talked to each other.”
