Exciting times at the Arboretum’s first-ever Graduate Student and Postdoc Research Symposium! This week, we celebrated the next generation of tree science leaders as they shared amazing talks on fungi, roots, and the evolution and conservation of oaks, including the endangered arroyo oak (Quercus brandegeei). Dear friends who write NSF GRFP rec letters, this year rec letters are due BEFORE the applications, so about 10 days earlier than normal on Oct. 11. Please don't let NSF's deadline change on rec letters screw over the applicants in your lives.
@BeingCharisBlog@DisabledStem Incredible!
I asked my pain doctor about a wheelchair recently (bc of intense and disabling foot pain which has persisted for + become more debilitating over 4+ years) and he said “before we start treating you like you’re disabled, we should try a wildly invasive spinal surgery”
For those attending #Evol2024, check out Mikaely Evans, #Hobanlab represent, poster Poster Board N16 (on the 27th) based on @NSF REU project. With @botanic_ash, and Emily Schumacher and others in Hoban lab who helped a lot!
This is insane. A species of Asteraceae (Heterosperma pinnatum) changes what kind of seeds it produces according to local growing conditions. If conditions are lousy, seeds with wind-dispersal structures are produced so the next generation can get the hell out of there.

It took me five years to complete & I wrote many parts of my thesis whilst in hospital.
Disabled academics like myself often work on crip time. This doesn't make our contributions any less. And academia is a better place for us being in it.
