CONTROVERSY unfolding at Illinois School District
Brave parents at @Naperville203 BLAST board members after they discovered how an elementary teacher was reportedly acting inappropriately with children.
The teacher would allegedly blow into kids' ears, slap their butts, and take videos of the children alone in the classroom.
The administration is reportedly IGNORING the parents' concerns, saying "there is only so much we can do."
WTF is going on at this district???
Thoughtful piece on the 8th-grade reading slump that never fully grapples with what drives reading comprehension. Instead, we're treated to the usual explanations: engagement, stamina, and over-testing.
MIA: fluency, vocabulary, and background knowledge.
OK, fine. Let's stop saying "Kids can't read." Kids can *decode* but that's the starting line, not the finish line.

@DrJBhattacharya Oh, I’m so sorry. She must have been so very proud of you and what you’ve accomplished. You’re a testament to her and you carry the values she taught you. ❤️
Thinking of you and your family.
“The single biggest allocation of federal funding for K-12 schools is Title I, which this year sent $18.4 billion in additional money to schools with high concentrations of low-income students.”
@Opportunitweet My husband and I were having this exact conversation. It’s truly hard to understand the insane things being said with the absolute confidence of someone sure they’re absolutely correct.
@TRHLofficial No one wants to follow. They want to keep their “follows” very low and their followers very high. I think that Elon promoting that ratio in the algorithm was a mistake. Follows are impossible for little accounts now, but yours is probably a glitch if it’s growing otherwise.
@TRHLofficial So all I had to do for people to like me was sacrifice my kid? My youngest thought he had dinosaur DNA until he was seven, at least. My eldest, at three, wanted to grow up to be a hotdog.
It’d be easy to manipulate kids who can’t understand the difference btwn reality & fantasy.
@PolitiBunny And he still won. And the governor there who was so rude to her black rival candidate still won.
It’s shocking how far “vote blue no matter who” stretches. I’m still surprised that Platner guy dropped. He would have won, too.
It’s difficult to see this happen to people and hard to process that an adult child would choose for their elderly parents to suffer in their last years over a minor conflict. It’s like a death.
We have a society of tribal narcissists.

The anti-memorization movement has left millions of students unable to think because every elementary operation consumes working memory.
For instance, solving equations feels smooth when basic arithmetic is automatic. It's like moving puzzle pieces around, and you just need to identify how they fit together.
But without automaticity on basic arithmetic, each puzzle piece is a heavy weight. You struggle to move them at all, much less figure out where they're supposed to go.
It’s the same all the way up the ladder of math: from arithmetic, to algebra, to calculus, to all sorts of university-level math and beyond.
@batterybabe1 Those camps are too expensive or too technical to be missing a day… but now I feel like we should have kept the ones where we just missed a day at the end >.>
@batterybabe1 Yes! I actually scheduled my youngest for seven things but canceled six of them. We were lucky enough to have three short trips but they all went from like Friday-Monday and interfered with two camps each 😂 My eldest had surgery so I didn’t know what his restrictions would be.
