Highflats pachycarpus (𝘗𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘢) is known from only one tiny grassland patch in KZN’s Midlands and bears creamy saucer-shaped flowers in summer. Habitat loss has pushed it to Critically Endangered. #BotSocSA
Happy Mother’s Day 🌸
Today we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and mother figures who nurture not only their families, but a love for nature that grows across generations.
Thank you for planting the seeds of care, curiosity, and conservation. 💚
Glossy leaves, sweet-scented flowers, and bright red-arilled seeds - the Natal mahogany (𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢) feeds birds, bees, and wildlife while offering shade and beauty. A fast-growing, evergreen choice for gardens near sun or semi-shade.

The Round milkball (𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘴𝘢) looks like green scaly marbles in clusters. Endemic to the Eastern Cape, it grows on hot, rocky hills. With <5 locations left, coastal development has it Endangered & CITES-listed. #BotSocSA

#FloralFriday 🌼 Eastern bell (𝘙𝘰𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢) has white to pale blue bell flowers in dense heads at stem tips. The only 𝘙𝘰𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 found outside the Cape Floristic Region, it grows in sandy coastal grasslands from the Eastern Cape to KZN.

Sweet-scented flowers, curved pods, and serious spines – meet the Dune thorn (𝘝𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘬𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴), a fast-growing coastal pioneer from KZN to Mozambique. It draws in bees, birds, and bushbabies, while keeping dunes stabilised.

Covered in snow white pea flowers in spring, the Sand peawood (𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘢 𝘻𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘪) is an elegant small tree for warm gardens, flowering twice yearly and unfussy to care for.

Floral Friday🌼
The African stargrass (𝘏𝘺𝘱𝘰𝘹𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢) brightens summer grasslands with yellow star blooms. Leaves appear first in neat ranks. This corm-forming plant is fire-tolerant but pressured by wild harvesting.

Beach snakethistle (𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢) was once common on sandy coastal flats from the Cape Peninsula to Agulhas. Urban expansion, invasives and overgrazing now threaten its habitat. Today it is listed as Vulnerable.
