LENI RECALLS KIKO'S SACRIFICE IN 2022 CAMPAIGN DURING LUCENA EVENT

Former Vice President Leni Robredo shared how former Sen. Kiko Pangilinan made the difficult decision to run as her vice-presidential candidate in the 2022 elections, setting aside his plans to seek another Senate term.

Speaking at the volunteer campaign kick-off in Lucena City, Quezon, on Thursday, March 20, Robredo recounted her conversation with Pangilinan when she asked him to be her running mate.

"Nung napapalaban po ako, tinanong ko po si Sen. Kiko. Sabi ko, 'Magkakandidato ako bilang Pangulo. Pwede bang ikaw 'yung aking maging Pangalawang Pangulo?'” she said.

At the time, Pangilinan was fully prepared for a Senate bid, with campaign materials and a schedule for filing his Certificate of Candidacy already in place. Despite this, Robredo said she insisted, "Wala na akong ibang choice na maging Vice President kundi ikaw."

Pangilinan, she recalled, asked for time to consult his wife, Megastar Sharon Cuneta, who was in New York visiting their daughter, Frankie. After deliberating overnight, he gave his answer: "Sige, Ma'am, igi-give up ko 'yung pagkandidato ko bilang Senador para samahan ka sa laban na 'to."

Robredo praised Pangilinan's selflessness and love for the country, emphasizing that he made a huge sacrifice in the name of public service.
