SHADES unites the UK LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Groups from @SonyMusicUK, @warnermusic and @UMusicuk, with a shared ambition to create lasting change across the industry - and it's now inviting independent labels and publishers to get involved!

What is Gen Alpha's relationship with music? 🧐

The BPI Insight team recently released a revolutionary video-based study on the music connections of 7 to 14 year olds in the UK 💡

'Right Here, Right Now: Generation Alpha Talk Music', powered by research platform @indeemo and created with input from @lemontankagency, is a qualitative study of in-home video interviews and tasks, with the participants sharing their musical touch-points right from their homes.

In total over 750 videos were captured from over 65 young people from across the UK and from all backgrounds.

The BPI is profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Kanya King CBE, and we join the whole music community in mourning her loss and sending our condolences to her loved ones.

“There is only one Kanya King, in the same way there is only one Bob Marley or one Whitney Houston. Kanya was truly one of one, a legend!

“What made her so remarkable was that she spent her career, through the vehicle of MOBO creating a platform so that there could be other Kanyas, other Tinie Tempahs, other Emeli Sandés and so many more artists whose names, stories and gifts may not otherwise have been given the space they deserved.

“Wearing my musician hat, my first ever award was a MOBO Award in 2007 and it was the spark my career needed at that time. I know I am one of countless artists whose journey was encouraged, amplified and validated by Kanya’s vision. We celebrate everything Kanya stood for and fought for led by her belief in the power of culture to change lives for the better. I join others in sending my love and heartfelt condolences to Kanya’s family, friends, colleagues and all who worked with her, loved her and benefited from her extraordinary legacy. Rest in peace Kanya, your impact will live on for generations.”

Lord Tim Clement-Jones setting the record straight 👏

During a recent debate on the King’s Speech, Lord Clement-Jones, Lib Dem Lords Spokesperson for Science, Innovation and Technology, highlighted new data in a report from WPI Economics and BPI (British Phonographic Industry). The report shows that a nascent licensing market for the use of music in AI could present significant wide-reaching economic growth potential.

It reinforces that record labels are motivated licensors, optimistic about the potential commercial opportunities for the creative sectors and AI developers. However, the scale of that opportunity will ultimately depend on policy certainty - particularly clear rules around record keeping, data use, and rights protection.
