🏗️ The #EngineeringSurveyor: First on Site

In any project involving an #Architect and an #Engineer, precise pre-design measurements are essential. The #Surveyor is among the first professionals to step onto the site. This is how they make a difference.

1. Control Extension

They begin by extending horizontal and vertical controls to the site, sub-scaling them from the national geodetic network (#KENREF), through procedures like #traversing, #resection, differential #GPS, and #Static survey, and #trigonometric levelling for heighting.

2. TopoCadastral Surveys

The surveyor then conducts the initial #TopographicSurvey, which helps the design team understand the terrain, drainage patterns, slope direction, slope stability (expressed as percentage of steepness), and water drop paths. They also delineate the plannimetric positions of surface features such as buildings, pavements, manholes, and other structures.

By locating and confirming parcel beacons, the surveyor provides accurate plot measurements and extents. The topo can also include #Earthworks and #volumetric data to quantify #cut and #fill as needed, complete with volumes dashboards. All this information is compiled into the initial #topo-cadastral plan, which is then supplied to architects and design engineers as the basis for design.

3. Setting Out and Construction Controls

Once the design is completed, the plan is returned to the survey team for #SettingOut. They peg planar features, #alignments, and critical points. Throughout construction, surveyors control #excavation depths, maintain both vertical and horizontal alignment for linear projects, and provide vertical control for #HighRise structures.

They also carry out #DeformationMonitoring to quantify settlement or #lateral movements along the X and Y axes, typically using optical instruments and strategically placed #zero-offset monitoring prisms. Surveyors additionally set accurate levels for #Landscaping works.

4. Final As-Built Surveys

At project completion, surveyors conduct #AsBuilt surveys, which document the final structure and assist in the creation of official blueprints for records and maintenance.
