Today, we visited Sunnyside Laerskool Oost Eind as part of our ongoing Andries Tatane Back to School campaign, reaffirming our commitment to creating safe, dignified, and healthy learning environments for our children.
The purpose of the visit was to officially hand over a contractor tasked with building the school’s toilet facilities, an intervention that is both urgent and necessary. Proper sanitation is not a luxury—it is a basic requirement for learning, health, and dignity. No child should be expected to focus in class while basic hygiene needs are compromised, and no educator should work under conditions that undermine safety and wellbeing.
During the visit, we engaged with the school management, inspected the facilities, and ensured that the scope of work is clearly defined so that repairs are carried out efficiently and to standard. This handover marks the beginning of practical action on the ground, moving beyond reports and complaints to real service delivery that learners and staff can feel and benefit from.
This intervention forms part of a broader commitment by the EFF to prioritise environmental health, sanitation, and infrastructure maintenance in public schools, especially as the academic year progresses. By addressing challenges such as dysfunctional toilets, we are protecting learners’ health, restoring dignity, and supporting an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning.
