Excellent article James. You are right on the money! I sit squarely in the middle of your described ‘ageing demographic’ and have too noted the ageing supporter base of ON & PF - whom I consider to be pretty much the only viable alternatives to the donor-owned Unaparty of LibLabNatGreenTeals.

Many of us are actually cognisant of the need to reach our younger generations, to engage them in determining their own future and not leaving it the incumbents.

Folk like @mattjcan and @SenatorAntic appeal to a younger group by way of their own age. @RennickGBR is also clearly an intellect and is reaching out to all Australians. We should all applaud their efforts to bring some sanity back to politics through rational debate and public discourse.

It is no good preaching to a ageing choir that will soon be memories. Today’s generations are reached through social media, not MSM.

As the Dad of 4 late teens I know how hard it is to have their attention focus on just one thing. This is unsurprising given the tsunami of wonderful opportunities and distractions they face in the modern world. It is a very different paradigm.

So I would be interested to hear just how you you would motivate younger folks into political involvement. I am not so sure that ‘emotional manipulation’ is the answer, rather we need to counter the ecosystem of titillation and enragement that has been manufactured by big advertising and data-harvesting companies such as Meta and Alphabet. They have no interest in our welfare.

For me the question is “What can we offer our younger people that they want?” I believe we all live in the most exciting times in generations. The future is not set, and I believe a message to them that THEY can control their destiny, that it isn’t all doom and gloom, that the world is not coming to an end, that it is good to have families and that they can look forward to a wonderful life if they contribute to it, is the way forward.

We need to counter the fear-mongering of emotional manipulators with honest truths. There are many challenges ahead, some known and some unforeseen. By assuring them that we trust them to make good, considered decisions, that they are enough to meet the future, it is they who will reap the benefits and enjoy the fruits of their work.

We need a message of hope.

Major Les Hiddins, born Leslie James Hiddins in Brisbane in 1946, became one of Australia’s most respected bushcraft experts through his extraordinary combination of military experience, survival knowledge and deep appreciation for the Australian landscape. A retired Australian Army major and Vietnam veteran, Hiddins completed two tours of duty in Vietnam between 1966 and 1968, serving initially as a forward scout in the infantry before transferring to army aviation. His work flying helicopters across remote northern Australia sparked a lifelong fascination with survival in the harsh outback environment. During these years, he learned extensively from Indigenous Australians, particularly in Arnhem Land and Cape York, gaining invaluable knowledge about native plants, bush medicine and traditional food sources that had sustained Aboriginal communities for thousands of years.

Hiddins later became widely known across the country as “The Bush Tucker Man” through the hugely popular ABC television series that aired from the late 1980s through the 1990s. Travelling across deserts, rainforests, coastlines and remote wilderness areas in his trademark slouch hat and Land Rover, he introduced Australians to the remarkable variety of edible plants, animals and survival techniques found in the bush. His calm manner, dry humour and genuine passion for the land made the programme both educational and deeply entertaining. Unlike many television personalities, Hiddins earned admiration through practical expertise rather than performance, and viewers appreciated the authenticity he brought to every episode.

Beyond television, Hiddins made lasting contributions to Australian survival research and education. In 1987, he received a Defence Fellowship to research survival techniques in northern Australia and became the principal author of the Australian Army’s survival manual. The same year, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to the military in the field of combat survival. He also authored numerous books on bush tucker, exploration and Australian history, helping preserve traditional knowledge for future generations. Even in later life, Hiddins has remained passionate about educating Australians about the natural environment, continuing to share his knowledge through books, interviews and digital projects devoted to the unique resources of the Australian bush.

The fundamental underpinning source of all human civilisation is surplus energy . Without spare energy the daily quest for the basics of survival consume every waking moment of every individual.

Over the centuries since ancient Mesopotamia, we first co-opted animal muscles but then discovered solid, liquid and gaseous fossil fuels. These in turn all provided heat which gave us steam, combustion engines and electricity.

History shows at each of those inflection points we enjoyed a quantum leap in the overall standard of living of our societies with food abundance, health, social support, learning and the arts.

Today, the wealth of Australia, the very fabric of our society, is stitched together at the most basic level by abundant, cheap energy.

To have lost our energy independence and become vassal to the whims of foreign interests is one of the great betrayals of all Australians. The perpetrators were successive governments (of all colours) in the pay of foreign interests.

This current near-crisis makes it abundantly clear that we MUST regain our independence and sovereignty of energy supply. This goes from getting it out of the ground to refining and distribution.

Our Nations wealth is not just in energy but also our land, agriculture, pastoralism and minerals. We have it all right here at home. Why do we lack the collective will to use it?!

So I say to you all, it is time for Australia to look inwards, to get off our fat backsides, become independent again and to recover the true nature of our Lucky Country. The answer is as plain as the nose on your face.

Just a small point. The firebombing of Dresden and Tokyo was specifically intended to break the morale of the civilian population by deliberately targeting them with incendiary munitions over a wide area with the precise (pardon the pun) intent of destroying homes and civilian infrastructure. The resultant firestorms could in some ways be likened to Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I guess just an earlier version of ‘regime change’ operations.
