IF WE’RE GOING TO ALLOW TENT ENCAMPMENTS, WE NEED RULES AND ACCOUNTABILITY

If the city is going to allow temporary tent encampments in public parks, then there should be clear rules, structure, and accountability.

Provide standardized one- and two-person tents so the area remains organized and consistent. Families with children should receive priority for placement into appropriate housing and services. Establish clearly marked spaces for each tent, adequate trash and sanitation facilities, designated walkways, and signage identifying the area as a temporary encampment — not permanent housing.

But managing an encampment isn’t the same as solving homelessness.

We also need far more accountability for the billions of dollars being spent. Create a centralized, transparent system tracking every nonprofit, organization, vendor, contractor, service provider, and government-funded program receiving homelessness-related funding.

Organizations should be audited before receiving funds, while receiving funds, and after the funding period ends, with measurable outcomes showing exactly where the money went and how many people actually moved from the street into stable housing.

If we’re going to spend billions addressing homelessness, taxpayers should be able to see who received the money, where it went, and what results it produced.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

DO YOU HAVE A HIGH INTERNET BILL?
Spectrum bill-saving tips

Here are two things you can try if you’re a Spectrum customer:

1. Call Spectrum’s Retention Department.

Let them know you’re having trouble paying your bill and ask if there’s anything they can do to lower it.

If the first representative can’t help, politely thank them and try again later with someone else.

They may offer you a mobile line. If it makes sense for you, consider BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). Avoid upgrading or financing a new phone just to lower your internet bill.

2. Check the California LifeLine Home Broadband Pilot Program.

If you qualify through Medi-Cal, CalFresh/SNAP, SSI, or certain other assistance programs:

My Spectrum App → Support → Search “California LifeLine” → Complete & Submit

If approved, you may qualify for up to $20/month off your internet bill.

My recommendation: Try Retention first. Then, if you qualify, apply for the California LifeLine broadband benefit for additional savings.
