Having students write down something they are grateful for and have them share if they feel comfortable. It starts the class off on a very positive tone!

@Bigler_Michelle I especially love tip #4 which uses cognitive tasks to get students out of a self-destructive cycle. It's very effective, and the tasks can benefit other students, too! (ex: having older students record themselves reading books for younger students with learning disabilities)
