I am the first mayor of Chicago in modern history that doesn't have ties to the political machine. No one made me, except for the people that raised me. That's working people. And that's who I'm always going to fight for.
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Spencer Leak Jr., a respected leader, devoted public servant, and pillar of Chicago’s Black community. As Vice President of Leak & Sons Funeral Homes, Spencer carried forward a family legacy that has served Chicago families with compassion, dignity, and grace for generations. Through his work, he helped countless families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments while ensuring their loved ones were honored with care and respect. Spencer’s impact extended far beyond the funeral profession. He was a steward of community, a champion of service, and a proud representative of a family whose name has become synonymous with faith, generosity, and commitment to Chicago’s neighborhoods. The Leak family has long stood at the intersection of service and social justice, and Spencer continued that tradition through his leadership, philanthropy, and unwavering dedication to the people of this city. On behalf of the City of Chicago, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Leak family, the entire Leak & Sons Funeral Homes family, their many friends and colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by Spencer’s kindness and service. May we honor his memory by continuing to uplift one another with the same compassion, dignity, and commitment to community that defined his life. His legacy will endure in the countless families he served and in the city he loved.
Black and Brown folks' voting rights continue to face escalating threats nationwide, as Trump and the far right-wing advance their effort to restrict voting access. @Chicago must stand firm to protect the progress our people have fought for over generations. There was no greater leader in that fight than the late Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., and I am proud that we came together as a city to celebrate his legacy by moving proactively to protect voting rights, expand civic participation, and ensure every Chicagoan has a voice in shaping our future.
I restored Chicago's Department of Environment @ChicagoDOE to safeguard the health of working communities, which have historically borne the negative impacts of pollution, while funding initiatives to decrease the City's reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable transit across @Chicago.
NEW: Mayor Brandon Johnson and @ChiPublicHealth announced the citywide expansion of the Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) program, bringing compassionate crisis response services for those experiencing mental health crises to every community in Chicago.
The permanent community space will host community wellness and healing through violence prevention efforts, youth and arts programming, cultural celebrations, food justice initiatives, and resident-led organizing and engagement.
The project benefited from the discounted sale of City-owned land through ChiBlockBuilder, empowering Blocks Together to acquire the land at just 10% of market value.
The vacant parcels at 3713-17 W. Chicago Ave sit adjacent to Block Together’s existing office spaces. Upon completion, the project will empower the organization to extend their reach and increase the impact of their mutual aid services.
The Community Plaza will complement nearby developments along the Chicago Avenue corridor in West Humboldt Park while providing wraparound services to support residents and nearby communities.
The project also received funding support through Chicago Public School’s Sustainable Community Schools program.
Small family-owned businesses are the backbone of our economy, and as we continue to build a safer, more affordable Chicago, may we ensure everyone is included in that picture. (3/3)
I had the pleasure of joining Latino business owners across the Southside of Chicago to discuss the collective power we have when we all come together. (1/3)
We are rapidly approaching our goal of planting 75,000 trees across Chicago, particularly in the neighborhoods that have the least tree cover. Maintaining a vibrant urban forest is crucial for the health of every Chicagoan. Happy Arbor Day, Chicago. @StreetsandSan@ChicagoDOE
The One Fair Wage Ordinance protects Chicago’s working families and ensures we put the working people of this city first! As long as I’m Mayor, the workers of this city will always have a partner on the fifth floor.
I’m committed to making sure the people that run this city can afford to live in it. We are not going to roll back hard-earned raises from tipped workers, who are overwhelmingly Black and Brown women.
When we create safe spaces for our young people to come together, they will build community. Through initiatives like My CHI. My Future. and Chicago Youth Works, my administration is investing in making Chicago safe and affordable for our children now, and their children in the future. @ChiFamSupport@chiyouthworks
A special thank you to my good friends Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, Chairwoman Alisha Bell, and Detroit Council Member Denzel A. McCampbell! (2/2)
Detroit! Thank you for such a warm welcome last night. I was grateful for time well spent in community and being supported by Dems leading with conviction across the state of Michigan.

We are posting this video of Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson to amplify his admonishment that we take care regarding our words and his comment about some prioritizing profit over humanity. He was sharing with members of the press, one of which had just referred to undocumented immigrants as IA’s - the initials, not even the already dehumanizing label of “illegal aliens.”

We are grateful for the husband, father, and leader that was chosen for such a time as this to fight for a Chicago that works for everyone.
