Q: What’s bothering you most?

Jonathan Tavernari: There are losses, and then there are losses. My issue isn’t that they’re losing. They actually have valid excuses.

They’re missing Richie Saunders — supposed to be the face of the program. They don’t have Nate Pickens, who was expected to play solid backup point guard minutes. Dawson Baker was supposed to be the sixth man, giving you 15–20 minutes a night. I’m not even factoring in what Brody Kozlowski or Xavion Staton might have added. They brought in Abdullah Ahmed because they needed more.

So yes, there are reasons.

But where is the pride?

Forget representing BYU for a second. Where is the personal pride of saying, “I’ve been given an opportunity. I’m going to maximize it so I can earn NIL money, a better portal opportunity, maybe a contract in Europe, maybe a Summer League shot.”

AJ Dybantsa and Rob Wright III have been asked to do the impossible — score 70% of the points. But what about the other three guys on the floor? Why aren’t they doing everything possible to elevate themselves?

That final possession against West Virginia — five guys standing and watching instead of crashing for a rebound to tie the game — that was shocking to me.

The only criticism I have of Kevin Young is accountability. How hard is he holding guys accountable behind the scenes? That’s the one question I have. Because everything else — the exposure, the opportunity, the minutes — as former players, we would have killed for that.

Q: What are realistic expectations the rest of the way?

Jonathan Tavernari: It comes down to effort. Defense. Ball movement. Intensity.

How many times did Bronco Mendenhall tell you, “If we play hard, we’ll win”? Dave Rose said the same thing. Yes, the Big 12 is a different level — the competition is real. But if BYU plays harder, they probably beat West Virginia. If they play harder, they give themselves a real shot at Oklahoma State. If they play harder, they don’t get run out by UCF.

The UCF game was over early in the second half. That shouldn’t happen.
