Collect milestone 500th career Wins
MONTGOMERY – Cullman High School baseball coach Brent Patterson and Arab High School baseball coach Chad Hudson each recorded the 500th victory of their coaching careers last week to share this week’s AHSAA Spring Boys’ Sports Spotlight.
For Hudson, the 6-4 win over New Hope last week was loaded with plenty of drama, however.
Veteran announcer Archie Anderson of WRAB Radio explained.
“For starters, umpire Greg Tanner was struck by a wayward pitch during pitching warmups. He began the game, in the second inning, Tanner’s blood pressure dropped suddenly which sent him to the locker room and then to Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville where he was released around 2 o'clock the next morning. He said later an oncoming virus was more than likely the culprit and not the errant pitch.”
A replacement official took his place, and the game continued.
With Arab leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th, Anderson said the Knights had the bases loaded with one out when Dylan Kirkland smashed a hit to the fence that scored three runs that, as it turned out, gave Arab (13-9) the win. The Knights’ outstanding catcher hit the turf heading into third, however, due to an ankle sprain on the play. He is expected to be back at full strength in a few weeks, Anderson added. Luke Martin got the win striking out eight.
Hudson, whose record improved to 500-326 with the win, told Anderson, “I'm proud of Dylan getting that big hit to blow the game open a little bit and give us a little breathing room. And of course, Luke is our guy on the mound. We know whenever he's on the mound we have a good shot," he said.
Hudson, now in his 27th season as a head coach, has picked up 178 of his wins at Arab over the last 10 seasons. He won 182 at White Plains from 2007-2015, 87 at Saks from 2002-2006, and 87 at Springville from 1999-2001.
"Obviously it means I'm getting on up there in age," Hudson told Anderson. "But I've had a lot of great players and assistant coaches through the years. I'm very blessed to be in a place like Arab. I was talking to (assistant coach) Ridge Watson right before the first pitch that the stands were full again. It's just a great place to coach.”
Patterson’s 500th career coaching win came in a tough game as well with Cooper Loftin hurling a 1-0 win over Jasper in the Class 6A, Area 13 contest. Loftin allowed one hit and struck out seven for the Bearcats (11-11). The lone run came on a solo homer by Bennett Johnson in the first inning. The victory improved Patterson’s career record to 500-233 after the win.
The state’s all-time baseball wins leader, William Booth, now deceased, compiled a 1,217-519 record at Hartselle from 1987-2024. He passed away after last year’s semifinals. The Tigers fell to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in a hard-fought championship series the week of Booth’s passing from an extended illness.
“A lot of people say this, but there couldn’t be any more truth to it — I’ve been surrounded by unbelievable players and coaches,” Patterson told the Cullman Times. Patterson, who took over the program in 2008. “The memories and relationships are what I’ll take away from all this … that’s what makes this so special. Cullman has supported this baseball program for decades and I’m grateful to play a part in it. “But I’m much more proud of the way Cooper pitched and how our guys competed in a really clean, hard-fought game to get that first area win.”
Hudson and Patterson, who became the 36th and 37th coaches in the AHSAA to reach the 500-win milestone.
