Brazoria County has a rich history filled with fascinating stories, local legends, and tales passed down through generations.
In her book Ghosts Along the Brazos, Catherine Munson Foster preserves a collection of ghost stories and folklore from the Brazos River region, offering readers a glimpse into the mysteries and traditions that have become part of our local heritage.
From historic homes to tales of the unexplained, these stories remind us that history isn't always found in textbooks. Sometimes, it's found in the stories people continue to tell.

Ever driven past a historical marker and wondered about the story behind it?
๐ This one honors Josiah H. Bell, one of Stephen F. Austinโs Original 300 colonists. Bell came to Texas in 1821 and settled along the Brazos River, where he helped lay the foundation for the community that would become West Columbia.
โณ More than 200 years later, Bellโs story is still part of the landscape of Brazoria County. So next time you spot one of these familiar markers, take a second look. There might be a pretty incredible story hiding in plain sight.
๐ฌ How many local historical markers have you stopped to read?
