What’s the biggest risk factor for developing breast cancer? Breast Surgical Oncologist at Cedars Sinai Dr. Lauren DeStefano, answers this important question and explains why staying proactive with annual screening mammograms matters.
While family history can increase risk, most people diagnosed with breast cancer have no known family history. In fact, about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
That’s why annual screening mammograms are so important. Mammograms can help detect breast cancer early, often before symptoms even begin. Visit the link in our bio for more information.

True or false: all breast lumps are cancerous? FALSE!
Board Certified Breast Radiologist, Dr. Brooke Caldwell explains that many women come in with breast concerns that turn out to be benign conditions. This may include cysts, hormonal changes, fibroadenomas, and other non-cancerous findings.
Finding a lump or noticing a change in your breast can feel scary, but getting it checked is the best thing you can do. Many breast changes are not cancer, but it’s still important to speak with your doctor and follow recommended imaging guidelines if you notice something new or unusual.
Prioritizing your breast health should never come from a place of fear. Early evaluation and routine screening are important tools in staying informed about your body.

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month 🦴
Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because it develops without symptoms, until a fracture occurs. That’s why early detection is so important. At Breastlink, we offer DEXA (bone density) scans, a quick and painless test that helps measure your bone health and detect osteoporosis early. With this information, you and your doctor can take steps to protect your bones and reduce your risk.
Ask your doctor if it’s time for your DEXA scan. 💗
Worried about radiation from a mammogram? Our doctors explain why you shouldn’t let this concern keep you from getting screened.
The dose is very low. In fact, the American Cancer Society states that mammograms use small amounts of radiation, and the benefits of screening outweigh any potential risk.
The facts speak for themselves, schedule your annual screening mammogram today.
Can men get breast cancer? The answer is yes, and awareness matters. 💙
At our Dance Your Way to Health event, Cedars-Sinai Breast Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Lauren DeStefano answered an important audience question about male breast cancer and the importance of knowing your body.
While breast cancer in men is rare, it can still happen, and because there are currently no routine screening guidelines for average-risk men, self-awareness plays an important role in early detection.
Men should speak with their doctor if they notice:
• A lump or swelling in the chest area
• Changes to the skin or nipple
• Nipple discharge
• Persistent pain or tenderness
Knowing what’s normal for your body and speaking up about changes can make a difference.

It’s actually very common and often not linked to cancer, but there are times when you should pay closer attention. If the pain is focal (in one specific spot), it’s important to talk to your doctor.

Do you know your breast cancer risk? 💗
Dr. Brooke Caldwell, Breast Radiologist at Breastlink Long Beach, explains why completing a breast cancer risk assessment is important.
Understanding your individual risk helps guide when to start screening, how often to screen, and whether additional tests may be right for you. It’s also important to remember that your risk can change over time, which is why regular re-evaluation is key.
Reminder: Even if you are considered low risk, routine screening mammograms are still essential for early detection and should not be skipped.
