A college-educated renter is working class, their non-college educated landlord is not.
A wage-earning household with a mortgage is working class, the retirees next door who have paid off their mortgage are not.
Melinda Cooper et al did this well in The Asset Economy (2021). Class position in contemporary rich countries is dependent on asset ownership, particularly home ownership.
We need to sort out whether โthe working classโ is
a. 99% of Americans whose income comes from labor and not capital
b. White guys who work with their hands
c. Poor people
d. People without college degrees
e. Factory workers in Bangladesh or China or thereabouts
