If you think this ecosystem of bloated dev costs and ever increasing bland ass games with huge file sizes focused on fucking consumers as much as possible is sustainable, I've got some Ubisoft stocks to sell to you
Hey hey, here I am again. Your posts are interesting to ramble under, hehe.
I think MW1 and MW2 were def great too. Main difference for me is that MW1 and MW2 don't really have similar replay value. I would happily boot it up again to finish it once, but then I wouldn't touch it again for a couple of years. MW1 and MW2 are more definitive rollercoasters with very little room for different experiences from play to play, while I think Halo (and in this case Reach) lends itself to much more varied playthroughs due to the sandbox and enemy and weapon loops (despite my earlier criticisms of Reach, I think that still stands).
Long-winded way to agree I guess, but I found it interesting to see where the experiences might differ precisely. There's of course much more obvious differences, but underneath the surface I think that's the iterative / gameplay loop difference.
H3 had some great ideas, but not the greatest execution.. And some overly cheesy lines. I think Halo always had some "one liners", but they usually fit or were just fun. "To war" from Miranda is unintentionally hilarious considering she's standing around again after that cutscene. Her and Johnson's death were also... silly. I felt for Johnson, but both deaths felt forced and not strong writing wise.
Chief and Cortana were the strongest parts for me, as well as Arbiter and his silver commander. But we got sooo little Arbiter. I don't know how much was true that people didn't like playing as him in H2, I was quite young playing H2, but I adored his story. Oh, and Truth felt way more than a generic religious zealot compared to being more of a scheming mastermind in H2.
Anyway, hope that wasn't too long a ramble... Halo is next to LOTR probably my favourite franchise. Absolutely loved all the games including Reach, despite criticisms. I miss the days of checking my stats on Budgie. net for H3 multiplayer.
Reach was a different cup of tea, gameplay wise it's probably my least favourite (the elites were hella annoying and multiple types not going down to sniper headshots..meh), but the story might be up there for me with CE.
Absolutely knocked it out of the park in terms of atmosphere, suspense (it really felt like there was a "fighting chance" you believed in alongside the others, even if you knew how it would end) and character work. All of the deaths are still etched into my mind as well.
I think it's CE / Reach - Halo 2 - Halo 3 ODST - Halo 3 for me, ranked best to worst story-wise.
Biggest crime to me was that you basically were obligated to use certain guns and always go for the flying bots that shielded the rest. That and knights just teleporting out. Sure, you had "meta" guns in the OG games, but there were always different viable options and routes to go through enemies. Such a slog and unfun gameplay loop in H4.
