🇰🇪 BRIAN MUCHENE | MASHUJAA DAY 2026 MESSAGE
KENYA HAS ALWAYS BEEN SHAPED BY ITS YOUNG GENERATION
Fellow residents of Dagoretti South and Kenyans at large,
Today, as we mark Mashujaa Day, I remind those who may have forgotten our history to look back at the struggles that shaped Kenya.
Our nation was not built by people waiting for their hair to turn grey before stepping forward to serve.
- Tom Mboya — The Voice of Freedom: At just 23, he was already championing political freedom and workers’ rights.
- Muthoni wa Kirima — The Unbroken Warrior: She joined the struggle against colonial rule as a young woman of about 22.
- Dedan Kimathi — The Forest Commander: He rose to lead the armed resistance, becoming a symbol of courage and sacrifice at 31.
- Bildad Kaggia — The Radical Voice: At 26, he was actively involved in the militant struggle for Kenyan independence.
Just to mention a few.
Their courage, youthful energy and defiance helped change our country.
- Tom Mboya later studied at Ruskin College in Oxford and returned to Kenya in 1956, at around 26, to continue serving the country.
- Mwai Kibaki studied at the London School of Economics and returned to Kenya, entering active politics as KANU’s Executive Officer at around 28 years old. At 31, he was in government, helping shape Kenya’s economic journey.
Kenya has gone through three defining liberations, which have been shaped by young generations willing to challenge the status quo:
- Independence in 1963;
- The restoration of multiparty democracy in 1991; and
- The promulgation of the new Constitution in 2010.
Young people have always helped shape our nation.
In 2024, our Gen Z stepped forward. They marched to Parliament with their phones, their voices and their constitutional right to be heard. They demanded accountability and a better life, challenging a government that had failed to listen to the concerns of its people. They are our modern-day heroes.
But their courage came at a terrible cost. Families have buried loved ones, injured protesters continue to need support, and families still demand answers about missing persons.
The Ruto administration announced a KSh 2 billion compensation framework. Let it be clear: no amount of money can ever compensate for a human life. The Government must take responsibility, ensure fair and transparent compensation for victims, fully support those requiring medical and psychological rehabilitation, and provide long-term assistance to those whose injuries have left them unable to earn a living.
KSh 2 billion must not become a substitute for justice. We demand accountability for human rights violations, transparency in the compensation process and answers for every family still searching for a missing loved one. No more evasions. No more statistics without names.
To those who look down on young people and claim they lack the qualifications to take up leadership roles, I ask you: were the young men and women who fought for independence, multiparty democracy and a new Constitution too young?
It is because of their sacrifices that those holding positions of leadership today enjoy the freedoms and opportunities they have. Let us respect the young generation and give them space to lead. This is their time.
Babu Owino, Edwin Sifuna and Ndindi Nyoro — I salute you. Let us continue fighting for a better Kenya. You inspire us.
I also honour our United Opposition leaders who continue to challenge the UDA administration, especially my party leader, H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, alongside other leaders who have taken a stand in our national political debate.
Our heroes did not wait for permission to shape history. Neither should our generation.
Happy Mashujaa Day, Dagoretti South!
Skiza Wakenya! Kila Mtu Ni Muhimu!

Parents were promised that school bursary applications would be done online, yet families in Dagoretti South are still being asked to visit chiefs’ offices physically.
Why promise digital convenience only to make the process harder?
Our parents deserve efficient bursary system.

A person's greatest victory is not always professional success or public recognition. Sometimes it is surviving a difficult night and finding the strength to face another day.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the proposed Lamu refinery is crude supply. Kenya’s current commercial production cannot supply a facility of 700,000 barrels per day, making a credible sourcing strategy essential.

The Political Parties Fund is a quiet incentive. Parties that perform well in elections can access public money. Some politicians form outfits hoping to turn them into cash-generating assets. #IndepthConversations WhySoManyParties
Parties in Kenya are often ethnic or regional strongholds first, national platforms second. Leaders mobilise their base, then shop for alliances. That’s why new ones keep emerging.
#IndepthConversations
WhySo ManyParties
Owning a party gives a politician control over nominations. In big parties, factions can lock you out. A private vehicle offers an exit strategy and stronger negotiating power.

WhySo ManyParties
With over 100 registered parties, Kenya’s political landscape is crowded. Many are not built to govern long-term — they’re built as bargaining chips for 2027 coalitions. #IndepthConversations#WhySoManyParties
