“People always ask me what makes a great goalkeeper. Is it reflexes? Is it positioning? Is it technique? Those things matter, of course, but the greatest quality is courage.

Tonight I watched a 40-year-old goalkeeper stand in front of Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez and the reigning world champions, and I never once saw fear in his eyes.

Vozinha reminded me why goalkeepers are different. We don’t have the luxury of hiding. Every mistake is punished, every save is remembered. Against Argentina, he accepted that responsibility and carried his country on his shoulders for more than 120 minutes.

I saw a goalkeeper who never stopped believing. Every save he made gave his defenders another reason to fight. Every time Argentina thought they had finally broken Cape Verde, there was Vozinha again diving, stretching, commanding his area and refusing to surrender. Even late in extra time, when most 40-year-olds would be struggling to move, he was still denying Lionel Messi with outstanding saves. That isn’t luck; that’s years of experience, discipline and an incredible mentality.

Modern football has made people believe that once you reach 35, your career is coming to an end. Vozinha has just shown the world that age doesn’t decide your level your mentality does.

What makes his story even more beautiful is that this was Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup. Imagine the pressure. Imagine carrying the dreams of an entire nation making history for the first time. Most goalkeepers would freeze. He became even stronger.

Throughout this tournament he has been magnificent. He frustrated Spain with a remarkable clean sheet, he helped Cape Verde reach the knockout stage when almost nobody believed they could, and against Argentina he once again proved why he became one of the stories of this World Cup.

Argentina may have progressed, but if you ask me who earned the world’s admiration tonight, my answer is simple Vozinha.

There are performances that win matches, and there are performances that inspire people. Vozinha’s performance belongs in the second category. Years from now, people may forget the scoreline, but they will remember the 40-year-old goalkeeper from Cape Verde who stood in front of one of the greatest attacks in football history and made them fight for every single goal.

That is what a true goalkeeper looks like.”
