Britain was largely a Christian country post Roman empire, and after that, Christianity spread further via Iona, Lindisfarne, Canterbury etc. The Vikings and Normans are pretty much one and the same (notice the 'Nor' - North - in Normandy). So what? This is medieval history, those people assimilated over decades and centuries, largely because the cultures weren't that different, the Normans were of course Christians too.
But compare that to the modern age, we've had big waves of immigration from Ireland from the 19th century. This century we've also had big waves of immigration from European states. Do the Spanish, Irish, French, Polish, Latvian, Estonian, Polish people ask for any special dispensations from our laws and culture? Are any of these people associated with waves of crime like the Afro-Caribbean descendants with their penchant for waving machetes around? Albanians excepted, there is no crime wave or integration issues associated with any of these people (granted apart from the wave of Irish Republican terror from the 1970s-90s, but that was political in form, not cultural).
Now take the massive waves of immigration from South East Asia/West Indies and the small boat immigration from Africa and the Middle East. Much of these have bought issues, the West Indies a crime wave of drugs, gang violence and low-level criminality. It's no coincidence that the oft-stated statistic of 'systemic bias' in the UK justice system which results in harsher sentences for black people prosecuted for possession of drugs over white people, actually has a real-world basis in that, those stats hide the fact that those prosecutions represent a failure of the UK justice system, when the crime in fact was supply, but lack of evidence only leaves the 'crime' of possession as a punishment.
Immigration from Islamic and third world cultures bring huge issues of integration, how is it possible when parts of their belief systems are largely where ours was 800 odd years ago? With ideas like arranged marriages, cousin marriages, bigamy, persecution of homosexuals, clannism, etc integration here is just wishful thinking.
Small boat immigration from Africa/Middle East is the latest crime wave to hit our shores, every week or two some maniac has a serious integration problem and chooses to randomly knife someone, often resulting in the death of the victim. Each continent seems to have its own flavour of criminality, from Africa or the Middle East it's usually a vicious assault upon women, whether that's rape or frenzied knife attack.
But of course, we've always been a nation of immigrants.
