BREAKING: America’s wild horses just got their lives back.
For years, our country’s wild horses faced a terrible outcome. In 2023, the U.S. government restored key protections that help keep federally protected wild horses and burros out of the slaughter pipeline.
What changed:
The Bureau of Land Management brought back strict limits on bulk sales. This helps stop “kill buyers” from quietly buying large groups and sending them to slaughter, in the U.S. or overseas.
The government also tightened oversight. Agencies now monitor sales more closely so people can’t buy wild horses in bulk at very low prices and move them into the meat trade.
The work isn’t finished. Lawmakers are still pushing the Safeguard American Food Exports Act. It would permanently ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of American horses for slaughter in other countries.
Wild horses are not products. They are part of the American West and deserve protection on the public lands they have roamed for generations.
