In the Netherlands, we earn a large part of our income thanks to a strong Internal Market. There are still plenty of opportunities to strengthen our economy. This is also necessary to secure an even stronger position for Europe on the world stage.

This evening, I spoke with other European leaders during a video conference about EU competitiveness. Key steps we need to take in this regard are to combat unnecessary regulatory pressure, improve the capital market and ensure affordable, sustainable energy. This is a top priority for our government, both nationally and at EU level.

This congress is the first since the new Dutch Prime Minister, Rob Jetten, took office.

Met deze stemming hebben Europarlementariërs kleine deelbelangen laten prevaleren boven het geopolitieke belang voor de EU, dat op dit moment heel zwaar zou moeten wegen. Het is pure sabotage van het Mercosur-handelsakkoord, na 25 jaar onderhandelen.

My consultations with member states on the latest tensions over Greenland reconfirm our strong commitment to the following:

▪️ Unity on the principles of international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty;

▪️ Unity in support of and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland;

▪️ Recognition of the shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, notably working through NATO;

▪️  Shared assessment that tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement;

▪️ Readiness to defend ourselves against any form of coercion;

▪️ Readiness to continue engaging constructively with the US on all issues of common interest.

Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days.
