thinking of several friends no longer living, all of them men, & all very gifted, distinguished writers, who'd refused to acquire cell phones, disdained email & computers, but managed to make their way with the assistance of spouses or children; in their lifetimes it was still possible to remain "off the grid" --even using, not computers, but typewriters. their independence was a kind of arrogance & did depend upon others' helping them out.
