It led to a dependency his while life that cost him everything, and cost me my father growing up. I helped my wife get clean for 4 years. The doctors gave her more drugs.

Turn the focus issues into a super power, can't focus on one book or something at a time, cool, study several things at once and get that much smarter that much faster. Also "self medicating" implies to me "self diagnosed", a really common problem.

I took the stuff one singular time when I was younger and it made me feel like all the bad stories you hear about meth. I saw what it did to my friends and others around me, it's meth, even if you think it's packaged differently.
