Today in 1981: the longest game in professional baseball took place. The Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings of the International League played to a 2-2 tie through 32 innings before play was suspended at 4:07 a.m.
At that time, there were 19 fans remaining at the game. Pawtucket's owner game them lifetime passes to the team's games.
The game featured former Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Wade Boggs. 25 of the 41 players in the game went on to the major leagues.
The game was completed on June 23rd with Pawtucket's Marty Barrett scoring the winning run in the 33rd inning. The two teams used 14 different pitchers who threw over 800 pitches and used 160 baseballs.

@parkerandtheman@BobPagesports Thanks for the shout-out — and the special mention of Jim Schneider. Jim and I transitioned from newspaper journalism to PR @UMichAthletics and enjoyed working with the media. Even today, many of my friends are in the media or retired, and those memories remain special.
Ernie Johnson: "Aaron Gordon made 10 three pointers tonight, tying TERRY ROZIER in 2020 for the most in a season opener in NBA history. I kid you not."

Here’s an interesting story from #ESPN Classic about the 1951 college #basketball#gambling#scandal that eventually pulled in Kentucky. The fallout was so severe that the NCAA suspended the Wildcats for the entire 1952–53 season.

With the latest #NBA#gambling#scandal, I started reading several articles that claimed to offer historical context — but most fell short of capturing the full depth and scope of the issue throughout basketball’s history. I think this is a decent timeline. #basketball
