John Stenhouse (Steinhaeuser) was the medical officer in Lewes and founded the sanatorium in 1905. He conducted work in child mortality and specifically death from tuberculosis. He also served in WW I with the Sussex Yeomanry as a Surgeon-Captain and was a member of the R.C.S

Breathtaking is important. It seems so accurate and the performances so convincing. We should look at what happened, partly for justice, but more to prevent this happening again. There simply was no need for this level of pain and heartache.

Yet we spent £150b on the health response (Germany spent £60b, France £30b). Yes it was because of fraud!

When we look at the govt’s track record it should come as no surprise that the response was actually that bad

- one of the longest delays in implementing lockdowns in the world

- then the longest lockdowns in the world (220 days versus France 150 days versus New Zealand 71 days)

- one of the only countries not to offer vulnerable Covid patients a clinical assessment

Some UK uniqueness:

- only country to reduce bed capacity at the start of the pandemic

- only country to use an automated online tool (111) as the sole triage system

- probably the only country to downgrade PPE within a month of the pandemic

I know many of you may think it was like this all around the world. It wasn’t. Many countries managed it much better - most, in fact. And crucially, the vast majority of countries protected their healthcare staff.

And remember at the time the UK was downgrading PPE, we were an international outlier. WHO never changed the advice. Even in poorer nations, medical staff were still kitted out in FFP3. Germany, France, Spain, Norway,…never downgraded.

There were limited tests available, even though we had months of warning

It should have been a clinical call who gets tested not a management call
