@thinkdefence I don’t think anyone in the UK cares what the Southern Irish think politically though it’s a great country socially. They and their media obsess about the UK and are surprised the Irish viewpoint is not considered at all in the UK media or politically.
@andrewrawnsley Your analysis is bang on. His analysis is prescient and forward looking but that means that our student union hack govt of third raters probably will ignore it despite his electoral record in re-election of Labour governments
@ITCommonGround@IrishTimes A talented author but his embarrassment about his birth country and neurosis about Empire has zero traction in the UK. History is history
@chrisadonnelly@windsorrocker They did it because they get high quality players and support from Ulster which supported Irish rugby during the long years when it was seen as a largely Protestant garrison game by many in Southern Ireland. The choice argument is republican guff.
Yes, I get it, you all hate Tony Blair etc you’ll find loads to disagree with here I’m sure - but the quality of analysis of our problems and what any potential leader ought to be thinking about if they want to solve them puts this essay light years ahead of what any current contender for national leadership has offered. Anyone who wants to be an effective prime minister (including the current one) should read it
I’m sick to death of language describing women, girls & mothers being removed, when this doesn’t happen to men’s language. I’m sick to death of women’s sport being wrecked when it doesn’t happen to men’s. I’m sick to death of men validating their delusion in women’s intimate spaces, making women & girls extremely uncomfortable & intimidated. I loath this latest version of misogyny, and I despise the women who give away our hard won rights, safeguards & opportunities. Today was a good day!
It has taken Bridget Philipson eight months to come to the same conclusion as most people come to in seconds.
And she's our education secretary!
