Thomas Sowell remained a Marxist well into his twenties, even after studying economics at the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman.

What changed his mind was his experience working for the Department of Labor in 1960. While studying Puerto Rico’s sugar industry, Sowell found that unemployment was rising as federally mandated minimum wages increased.

He expected government officials to share his interest in whether the minimum wage law was actually helping workers. Instead, he discovered that they were more concerned with preserving the law because it provided roughly a third of the department’s funding.

That experience fundamentally changed Sowell’s view of government. He realized that public officials, like everyone else, have their own self-interest and that they may preserve programs that benefit them regardless of the effects on those the programs are meant to help.

Peter Thiel made the same diagnosis in 1996. He watched universities celebrate racial and gender diversity while systematically stamping out diversity of thought.

His point was simple. A campus full of people who look different but think alike is not diverse, it’s just ideological monopoly wearing a costume.

Sowell and Thiel were describing the same phenomenon from different angles. Multiculturalism and “diversity” were never the end goal. They were the instrument. The real objective has always been the capture of institutions, universities, corporations, government, culture, and the enforcement of one narrow worldview.

Demographic checkboxes were the most effective tool available to achieve that.
Once the institutions were staffed and policed by people who already agreed on the fundamentals, dissent became “hate,” disagreement became “harm,” and the old liberal commitment to open inquiry quietly died.

The diversity bureaucracy eventually succeeded at what it was actually designed to do.
