The confrontation broke out on the opening day of the party's 50th National Conference. Representatives from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office were attending as general observers. Chinese officials labeled their presence an emergency situation and demanded their removal to enforce Beijing's policy of isolating Taiwan.

Erickson stood firm, insisting the Taiwanese representatives had every right to remain. Refusing to accept the decision, the Chinese delegation staged a protest and abandoned the event altogether.

The photo shows seven scouts. It was the morning after we broke out of the encirclement. The order was simple: hold our positions until the battalion had withdrawn. We knew this was most likely a one-way ticket.

As we sat in the dugout, waiting for the end, a silence reigned that weighed heavily on our chests. We understood that this was the end, because the longer we held out, the tighter the encirclement would close in, but we remained silent. I still remember that look in my comrade’s eyes. It held the realization that it was the end. It was as if he were saying, “It’s all over, but we’re here, side by side.” It was the look of people who had fought for one another and were ready to face death together.

The line between life and death became as thin as paper. It seemed as if the whole world had fallen silent, as if the war itself had paused to let me be with my thoughts. The warmest moments flashed before my eyes. I thought of my sister, my aunt, my uncle, my wife, my child... I thought, “There’s so much I didn’t get to tell them, so much I haven’t done yet.” And then the most terrifying realization hit me—the world existed without me and would calmly continue to exist without me.

That thought was terrifying, but at the same time, there was a strange, bittersweet freedom in it—the freedom of an absolute limit, when you inwardly accept your own end.
That night we made it out. All seven of us, without a single casualty. But that feeling still haunts me—the feeling that it’s already over, the feeling of the final battle.
