@MrDetroit_313 Agree. If he's coming off the bench next year on a team friendly deal, then I'm all about it... but if he's starting, we have some issues
As much as a love JD and the idea of keeping him, I don't think he is worth $40 m +. He is a great #3 guy to have but don't see him being a true #2 on a title contender. He is essentially a Jarrett Allen type right now IMO (currently making $30m). Doesn't mean JD can't keep growing and lift the ceiling but this is essentially where Allen plateaued as well after he was 23 y/o making his first All Star appearance in 2022
Sengun got $37 m/yr
Something in the $33 - $37 range feels "fair" to me. JD is more Hartenstein/Allen/Sengun/ Gobert tier vs Bam/KAT/ Holmgren
I'd love to see them pick up Tyson or Merrill in that type of deal
or something like this:
Detroit Pistons receive: Bobby Portis + Jaylon Tyson
Cleveland Cavaliers receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo + Caris LeVert
Milwaukee Bucks receive: Evan Mobley, Max Strus, Sam Merrill, CLE 2026 1st (#29 overall), CLE 2028 1st (unprotected), CLE 2030 1st pick swap
He's actually pretty close to that now on a per 36 min basis. He played 26 min/gm and averaged 9.9, but on a per 36 he is ~ 14 pts/gm. Also, while Amen is still the better offensive player, their stats are pretty close.. with Ausar being much more impactful on D
Ausar per 36: 14 pt/ 8 reb/ 4 ast/ 3 stl/ 1.5 blk
Amen per 36: 18 pt/ 8 reb/ 5 ast/ 1.5 stl/ .5 blk
@PistonsThoughts They do not need a "superstar", but they absolutely need an all star level player. Duren is better as a 3rd guy... need to have that all star level guy next to Cade to complete the "big 3".. with Ausar being 3b.
Minimum you need a N Powell, Herro, Murphy, MPJ level player
@MrOldSkool313@ayyo_arob@jamara23732@PistonsThoughts I think you can also throw Chet and Castle in the "stars" category as well as this point. Both All Star caliber players. Duren is more of a "3rd" guy.... Pistons need the true #2 to Cade
@DetroitTankCity If he wants to come back as a bench/rotational guy on a team friendly type contract, then I'm all for it... but he can't be a starter next year
I think the fundamental decision the Pistons need to make IMO is whether they want the future core to contain both Ausar and Duren. Having the 2 of them on the floor together, with their current skill sets, means you HAVE to get someone at the 1/2/3 that can be the primary ball handler and create on their own and a stretch 4 that can potentially protect the rim and also guard the wing well. Both players need to be able to shoot the 3 well and have a mid range game
I'm not saying they should or have to get rid of Duren, but if he isn't going to be in the future plans, then you need to move off of him now and build the team around the Cade/Ausar core. Moving away from Duren, opens up other options such as Giannis (not sure he makes sense for our team though) or like Zion type, if you can get a center that can shoot next to them
If you keep Ausar/Duren, then I think the roster needs to look something like this:
PG: Cade
SG: N. Powell or C White
SF: Ausar
PF: Trey Murphy
C: Duren
Bench:
Jenkins/Duncan/ Reed + maybe Tobias (if he wants to come back on a team friendly deal)
