Gonochorism is a fancy word for a familiar setup: a species where each individual is male or female, and sex doesn’t change. In animals, it’s the default — over 95% of species follow this rule, including all insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals. It’s the opposite of hermaphroditism, and it runs deep in biology.
To get specific, early in embryonic development, the body commits to one of two specializations: making eggs or making sperm. Once that path is set, other sex traits follow — and there’s no reboot. Even in intersex conditions, fertility can’t run both systems. Gonochoric species aren’t built for switching, they’re built for specialization.
Why such a rigid system? Think of it like limb regeneration. Some animals can do it — most can’t. It takes complex systems that evolution rarely develops unless it has to. The same goes for switching sex or doing both at once.
Gonochorism isn’t a flaw. It’s just the system biology uses to make life. And within that system, nature still finds endless ways to surprise us.
@river_is_nice You're missing crucial context. She consented to sex with two guys, she didn't consent to the whole town showing up and using her. She reported that it became coercive at some point. This wasn't the enthusiastic-participation-followed-by-regret situation some are painting it as.
@X_Aeon_X Trying to be woke about who you date just doesn't work for most people. You're attracted to who you're attracted to. By all means be open minded, but trying to fake attraction to be equitable or whatever just ends up being awkward and hurts feelings more than just swiping left.
The stupidest move trans activism ever made was trying to make 'trans women are women' the beginning and end of all argument. If your flagship motto is a self-evidently a lie, don't be surprised if people have questions. But this one comes a close second in idiocy. Trans people already have human rights. The problem is that they're demanding that women surrender theirs.
@rosie_88i 11-16 or more, we don't see the back of the shirt (it could be one big hole, the same 6 holes, or more). But topologists also have weird definitions of holes so it also depends how you define one.
@Gurhadrum@XpTa_Z@gohanprolife2@GodlessEngineer Nah, already answered that — it's your turn to be challenged. What makes a flower male, female, or both? When a clownfish changes sex, what are we saying about its biology? How can we say that for seahorses, it's the males that get pregnant — isn't pregnancy female? Thoughts?
@PeterTatchell I feel like if we led with these propositions years ago there'd have been room to consider. Maybe still is. But at this point it just feels like a late shifting the goal posts, and I'm not sure it's practical to pick out the few trans women who might qualify.

@Gurhadrum@XpTa_Z@gohanprolife2@GodlessEngineer But what you can't do is define sex by human-specific traits that merely correlate with reproductive sex. Boobs and beards do not *define* sex, any more than the properties of coal define carbon. Coal is merely one form of carbon, and not all brittle black solids are carbon.
@Gurhadrum@XpTa_Z@gohanprolife2@GodlessEngineer If we consider sex a stable attribute that still applies if reproductive organs stop working, we can define sex as having a body *organized around* the production of one or the other gamete. The further traits are from the core definition, the less sex-specific they are.
@Gurhadrum@gohanprolife2@GodlessEngineer Sex universally refers to the reproductive functions of a species. Some species build sexual dimorphism on top of reproductive dimorphism, but it's species-specific, not universal. Problem is, some people want to divorce the definition of sex from its primary biological function.
@wazuhiru@GodlessEngineer Biological reality is what it is, we don't get to pick and choose what's true. Yes people can be jerks about it or skew the truth toward an unjust agenda. But I'm a reality enthusiast, and the growing bio-denialism on the Left is problematic — no thanks.
