German club Hoffenheim player Ozan Kabak became the target of racist circles in Turkey because of an interview he gave.

The footballer, who is also part of Turkey’s #2026WorldCup squad, was targeted by far right groups after saying in an interview published today that he is Kurdish and listens to Kurdish songs. Calls for Kabak to be removed from the national team are being made on social media.

She was in fact arrested for 10 years for simply speaking Kurdish. Let’s look at some of the anti-Kurdish laws Turkey has imposed and used as punishment:

1- Denial of Kurdish identity (1920s–1980s) where Kurds were officially labelled “Mountain Turks” to deny their ethnic identity and the words “Kurd,” “Kurdistan,” and “Kurdish” were banned in public discourse.

2- A 1924 policy banned Kurdish schools, organisations, and publications, which effectively eliminated formal Kurdish education and cultural life.

3- 1934 Resettlement Law allowed the state to forcibly relocate 100’s of thousands of Kurds which aimed at “Turkification” by dispersing Kurds and increasing Turkish population in Kurdish regions.

4- Language bans (especially 1980–1990s) under Law No. 2932, which meant Kurdish was banned in speech, publications, and daily life after the 1980 military coup. Even private use of Kurdish was restricted and punished.

5- Restrictions on Kurdish names and Kurdish letters like Q, W, X were banned in official names for decades.

6- Ban on Kurdish in media & education and Kurdish broadcasting was illegal until the early 2000s. Even today arrests of journalists, writers and artists is a daily occurrence. Journalists working in Kurdish media have also faced: arrests, prosecution and long prison sentences. Kurdish-language media outlets have frequently been shut down by court orders or emergency decrees and banned/restricted under anti-terror laws.

7- Anti-Terror Law (Law No. 3713, 1991–present); Criticised for broad definitions of terrorism- is used to prosecute Kurdish activists, journalists, and politicians and has enabled mass arrests and suppression of dissent. 100’s of thousands of Kurds, including children are in jail because of this law.

8- Penal Code Article 312 (speech restrictions) is used to prosecute people for speaking about Kurdish right OR for advocating for peace between Kurds and Turks.

9- Ban and closure of pro-Kurdish political parties where multiple Kurdish political parties have been banned or dissolved. At least 944 Kurdish political party members and officials were detained in one wave alone in 2016. 161 of them were formally arrested. Leaders such as Selahattin Demirtaş have been imprisoned for decades. Laws prohibit parties accused of “creating minorities”!

10- Restrictions on Kurdish municipalities where elected Kurdish mayors have been forcibly removed from office by the Turkish government and replaced with state-appointed trustees. Many of these mayors were also arrested or investigated under anti-terror laws, and now serving long jail sentences.

There are many, many instances of massacres, ethnic cleansings, pogroms and more against the Kurds- and this is not including oppression of non-Kurdish minorities!

So when Kurds celebrate Newroz or wear Kurdish colors or speak and sing in Kurdish in occupied Kurdistan across Turkey it is a revolution within a decades long revolutionary struggle for identity, for their humanity, Kurdishness and dignity!
