I know it’s hard to ask people not to get too emotional about Trent Alexander-Arnold but I really don’t have any emotions towards the idea of him returning. If he does, great. If he doesn’t, no worries.

I didn’t begrudge him the move to Madrid, like many. He’s our son, a Prince of the City who wanted to go out into the world and go on a quest of his own instead of staying in the comfort of the palace he helped us build.

I think there will always be a place for him at Liverpool, especially as long as the right back position isn’t claimed solidly. I know many don’t want to hear that but he really was one of the most important players we had in our most successful era in decades. He put this club on his shoulders with every assist and line-breaking pass - and there were a lot of them.

But he hasn’t been gone for long enough for me. If he quits Madrid after one season I’ll be disappointed in him. His needs to prove himself there and then come back to Liverpool as a King, not put his tail between his legs and run home at the first sign of adversity.
