…………October 1, 2026, emergency officials have officially confirmed that two people were killed, two were rescued and hospitalized, and a fifth person remains missing following the medical helicopter crash off the coast of Catalina Island.

* The Mission: The aircraft was a Eurocopter EC135 medical helicopter operated by REACH Air Medical Services. It was actively executing a emergency medevac mission to transport a patient from Santa Catalina Island back to the Southern California mainland.

* The Crash: The helicopter took off on Wednesday evening, September 30, 2026. Almost immediately after takeoff, it crashed into the Pacific Ocean near the helipad at Pebbly Beach, roughly one mile from the main city of Avalon.

* The initial emergency dispatch reports were generated around 7:50 p.m. to 7:53 p.m.. First responders and U.S. Coast Guard vessels quickly pulled four individuals from the ocean.

* Current Status: Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and two survivors were airlifted to mainland trauma units, including the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where they remain in stable condition. The wreckage of the aircraft has been located submerged in roughly 240 feet of water.

* Multi-agency dive teams, boat crews, and a Coast Guard submersible are currently carrying out an active search-and-rescue mission to locate the final missing person. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is arriving on-site today to open a full federal investigation into the cause of the crash.

As of this hour, the official identities and names of the two deceased individuals have not yet been released by the Los Angeles County Coroner's office, pending formal family notifications.

The L.A. County Fire Department noted that the five occupants on board consisted of a pilot, a flight nurse, the patient, and two other passengers. Officials have revealed that the patient being transported is the individual who is currently missing in the water.

(Note: Be cautious of older search results or social media reports detailing a separate "Catalina crash with five deaths"; those reports refer to an entirely different fatal twin-engine airplane crash that occurred inland near the Catalina Airport in a previous year.)
