Will Hungary's EU Council presidency come to a calm end, or should we expect a noisy exit similar to the tumultuous entry with its “peace mission”? On our BTI blog, @tamas_matura says that could happen, as Orbán may feel emboldened by Trump's victory.

📅#Elections in November 2024
👇 The slides below highlight the different political contexts as well as interesting aspects about the 3 upcoming elections in BTI-analyzed countries this month.

Larry Bartels @ForeignAffairs primarily blames political elites for populist surge. Their mismanagement fosters discontent, their clinging to power provokes anti-elitism, they promote illiberal notions or "concede more than they must or should." Inspiring!

Democracy dismantled: Nate Grubman @JoDemocracy offers a disturbing account of the leeway a law professor turned dictator has to undermine the rule of law when, in deeply divided #Tunisia, stability for many is more important than political freedoms.

In this piece,I discuss Nigeria’s economic crisis & the need for a rights-based approach to key policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies without adequate compensatory measures, contributing to the worst cost of living crisis in decades.@bti_project https://t.co/zwMUWP9kRt

Thoughtful piece by @marc_saxer@FESinAsia on shifting development pathways in age of geopolitical competition. New models challenge status quo, so "countries where elites have captured the state for their own benefit often lag in the development race."👏

Most competitive elections in its historys are up in #Botswana in October. In our BTI-Blog, Ved Pant @harvardirc@HarvardIR holds that inequality, economic turbulence and a political feud are divisive issues that could end the 57-year-old rule of the BDP.
