Remove the wayward stairs and extend the wall to the end of the actual stairway.

Use that corner for shelving or make it a small closet for shoes/coats or a mini pantry for additional food storage.

If you’re a contractor who doesn’t work with a designer you are doing yourself a disservice. You know you need somebody with style to pick the tile and finishes and make sure everything flows instead of you going to Home Depot asking for a box of “whatever is on sale”.
