If Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, AKA Sikiru Ololade Ayinde Balogun, had been born in this day and age of music streaming, I struggle to find an artiste that would have been his peer. The man was just too gifted. If he had existed in this aeon, he would have been the biggest Afrobeat star on the planet (Fuji would be considered Afrobeat by the rest of the world. Only Nigerians would understand the nuanced distinction between Afrobeat and Fuji).

Fela Kuti was a musical genius and deservedly got his flowers in life and in death. This isn't to undermine his legacy, but if, like Fela, Barrister had done more tracks in English and pidgin, he could have been as big globally as Mr Kuti.

Even at that, I will say that Fela is to Michael Jackson what Alhaji Agba was to Prince. For those who may find the above comparison too far off to comprehend, what I am saying is that Fela was like Professor Wole Soyinka, who got the Nobel Prize, but Sikiru Ayinde was like Achebe, not too far behind!

You cannot listen to Fuji Garbage Series 2 and not be captivated by this quotidian realm, taken to cloud nine by the beats from his gangan talking drums, even if you do not understand a word of Lukumi Yoruba. The man channelled mystic vibrations through his beat.

You could lose all your money in the stock market, and Barry Wonder would still be able to wipe away your sorrows with his beats and his baritone and sonorous voice.

I laugh when I hear today's youth attributing the origins of diss tracks to NWA or Tupac and Biggie.

You were an essential part of my childhood. I remember going to fetch water and running to Odunfa Street to catch a glimpse of you and Uncle Yinka Quadri at the Odunfa Caucus building. It was always thrilling to see you step onto the balcony with your smile. From Ondo Street, and even after we moved to Abeokuta Street, we still managed to visit our celebrities.

I remember Baba Suwe's office on Bola Street near Abeokuta Street. I recall how we screamed the day we saw our house in one of the movies you starred in. I also remember my pride when I told my friends at school that I used to see celebrities because they lived close to our house. Your acting alongside Aunty Ireti (Late Bimpe Adekola) in LEGAL WIFE was unforgettable.

Your role in Owo Blow parts one to three is forever legendary. Your catchphrase, "mo fi titobi Olorun Oba bura," combined with your calm demeanour, is iconic. Your aura belongs to a true SUPERSTAR.

In May 1990, during the burial rites of the great Hubert Ogunde, Dr I-Show Pepper (Ishola Ogunsola) led the dirge and procession while the prolific chanter Ogogo (Taiwo Hassan) carried the powerful oríkì and chants that day.

I-Show Pepper himself later joined the ancestors on 28 December 1992.

The same Ogogo who led those chants for Ogunde died yesterday (23 August 2026) and will be buried today, 24 August 2026, in his hometown Ilaro.

Who will now chant for him?
