Dearest gentle reader, it is with much pride that I present to you my very first scientific publication. So happy to finally get my MS work out there! A huge thanks to everyone who pitched in to make it happen!! Harrison et al. has a nice ring to it 😎https://t.co/jzX5VJtv0T
DNA Extraction question! 🧬
I'm ISO a good kit that is cost effective, works in plate format, and will provide good yields from whole-body single individual Drosophila samples 🪰. Our lab previously used the Axygen kit but they don't have enough in stock rn. Plz RT
@TheBugChicks All credit to Steph Benbow for their incredible work generating those figures! I'm utterly hopeless with all Adobe and Photoshop softwares 🤣

Biology in nature does not always fit into neat little human-created boxes like “female” or “male”. Sad to see the hate and bigotry being so casually thrown around right now. As a biologist and a lover of sport, disheartening to say the least. #Olympics2024Paris
But, individually, we can conquer imposter syndrome - because people are really out here submitting first drafts. Don't do that. But, don't pursue perfection either. A lot of revising happens between acceptance and publication.
Perfect is the worst enemy of good enough.
@UMBS is a truly special place. So thankful for the opportunity to live and teach here for a good chunk of the summer. Got up here just in time to catch the dragonfly larvae eclosing on the shore 🌅〽️
It’s teaching evaluation season for those of us who taught this past semester. Just gonna drop this ✨gem✨here as a reminder that students hold all sorts of biases and that existing as a queer scientist is not “inappropriate for the classroom” 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
@ArthropodAbbey Definitely worth the effort. I know folks who have received blatantly xenophobic responses in the past as well, so def not an isolated occurrence! Appears there’s 0 filtering whatsoever. Direct from the students’ fingertips to our screens 🤷♀️
@ArthropodAbbey Thank you so much for the kind response 💙 that was my first thought as well. We live in an age where we can analyze whole genomes with a few lines of code but we can’t filter out blatantly ignorant student responses from surveys??
@apis_melliferal We never had so much as an uncomfortable moment throughout the semester regarding my pronouns. I’d maybe understand if I had said “ok class, repeat after me. Gender is a societal construct!” each morning but I suppose just my identity and existence was problematic enough 🤷♀️
@LCMcHenry thanks for the love Laura ❤️ I had gotten used to this sort of thing in the south but this is definitely the most egregious experience I’ve had up here so far
