It is now, more than ever before, that we need to look at the forests not for material resources or taking up the CO2 stock, but as rich mechanisms that have their own life cycles and support a variety of flora and fauna.

🌳 3 years later, a filmmaker Vytautas Rimkevicius presented us a short film made around the story of the Building Site and why it matters to rethink the ways we treat nature in cities:

More than 50 urban trees in the UK disappear every day 😢
But with you on our side, we can plant more and make our cities greener! 😀
Text TREES to 70085 to donate £6 - which will enable us to plant a tree! 🌳 (txts cost £6+std network msg) #charitytuesday
Only 3% of UK wildflower meadows are left - bad news for pollinating insects like bees and butterflies, hit hard by habitat loss. So councils: not over-mowing or weedkiller-spraying small verges and green corners this year is one easy way to help 🐝🌻
Tree pits - sprayed (pic @DaveGoulson) or with plants? Weeds compete for water with young trees but can protect older trees from urine, drought, trampling & soil compaction and contribute to urban biodiversity. Selective weeding could save councils thousands of £! #morethanweeds
We already know this but it doesn't hurt to have it confirmed. What is interesting is that conventional forestry is focused on monocultures, but now we know that multispecies and canopy layers is much better in every way. Time to adjust the practice guidance.
Rewilding can go hand in hand with efficient agriculture, productive uplands, and a thriving forest industry. The evidence is building and it is becoming harder to ignore the sense of this natural approach to sustainable management. It must become mainstream not fringe thinking.
An interesting dilemma. The world desperately needs more trees & northern hemisphere conifers self set & grow like mad in New Zealand. Yet there are proactive policies to kill invasive species under the banner of encouraging native vegetation. Is this ecological tunnel vision?
Romanians protested hundreds of attacks on forest rangers, including two who have been brutally murdered, for protecting forests.
Each year, 38 million cubic meters of wood disappear from Romania’s forests... most of the trees are cut down illegally.

Dear councils, Please reduce needless over-mowing of our public spaces, green corners and roadverges, and avoid weedkillers and pesticides! Less work, fossil fuel use, cost. More wildlife, wildflowers, insects. 🐝

At this terrible time for rainforests, I’m excited to be able to provide a glimmer of hope & announce that the world’s first youth-funded nature Reserva will be in the Chocó rainforest, Ecuador. Only 2% remains because of resource extraction. Don’t pray for rainforests, save them
Last week Iceland held funeral, for death of Okjokull glacier. - must we now hold another funeral for death of #Amazonrainforest - how long will it be until we hold funeral for humanity - as world has resources to put out the fires but instead allows Brazil to burn it down
We can visualize carbon monoxide to understand the scale of fires in the Amazon rainforest.
This animation is a one month time-lapse of carbon monoxide surface concentration, as modeled by GEOS-5. Fires begin to intensify on Aug 5th.
