My grandma on my mom's side, before she died, was taking care of a person with down syndrome. Did they smile a lot? Sure. Did they have childlike innocence? Yeah.

You know what else? When given a pizza to eat at the age of 30, they struggled to get it into their mouths. They ended up covered in sauce, flailing the pizza around with a imbecilic look on their face. Then, a few years later, they died. Because life expectancy for them is short (although, science had figures out ways to make it longer for some reason).

When I hear this debate, all I think about is the indignity of watching this 30-year-old toddler in an adult body, slamming pizza against their face because they can't figure out where their fucking mouth is.

If two parents already know they are not emotionally, financially, or physically prepared to care for a child with severe disabilities, that reality doesn’t disappear after birth.
