So, is it safe to eat?
Science says yes.
So far, no solid evidence has proven that GMO foods are harmful to humans when consumed.
But safety is only one part of the equation.
Does it give enough nutrients?
It depends.
Some GMO crops are actually enhanced, like Golden Rice, which is engineered to contain Vitamin A.
Others are made just to last longer or resist pests.
First, what exactly is GMO?
GMO means Genetically Modified Organism.
In food, it refers to crops or animals whose genes have been altered in the lab, to improve yield, shelf life, nutrition, or resistance to pests and harsh weather.
This is different from traditional farming or selective breeding. This is gene-level modification.
First off, GMO isn't a new conversation.
The concept was introduced as far back as 2001 in Nigeria.
But in 2015, under President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria opened its doors to GMOs, allowing free flow.
Innovative public health interventions are only meaningful when people have access to the service.
