So Sukuna’s name (double-face spectre) may symbolise twins or brothers and it ties in with some other stories in Japanese mythology.
Perhaps Sukuna and Yuuji have a fate or background similar to the historical twins, Ousu no Mikoto and Oousu no Miko. In chapter 214, Sukuna remembers/refers to Yuuji as "the boy from that time" - possibly from back in the Heian era.
In one legend, the younger brother Ousu no Mikoto (小碓命) was asked by his father, the emperor, to teach his older brother
Oousu no Miko/Mikoto (大碓皇子) some manners, as the latter displeased and angered the Emperor greatly by being a hedonist and a sleaze.
Ousu then destroyed the older brother, tearing off his limbs and wrapping them in a straw mat before throwing them away. The emperor/their father became terrified of him and shunned him after this. The sadistic and cruel Ousu no Mikoto later came to be known as Yamato Takeru, a legendary prince who lived from ~72 to 114AD.
But the parallels don’t stop there: Ousu no Mikoto later burnt another king and the entire clan Kunitsuko after lighting fire on some grass he had cut with a flint. This place was then named “yakizu/tsu” - burning fort, a wordplay on “yaki” which means roast. (He also seems to have had a dark sense of humour, lol.) Which is fitting, since Sukuna’s techniques are centred around cooking and fire.
Prince Ousu was granted the grass-cutting sword "Kusanagi no tsurugi" (aka "Ama no Murakumo", lit. heavenly sword of gathered clouds, which is one of Japan's three sacred treasures). He was also given a bag, placed in the Ise-jingu Shrine, and was told to "open it at a critical juncture." An allusion to Sukuna's black box?
After his death, his spirit turned into a giant white bird, and he has been worshipped as "Otori-sama" (the great bird) throughout Japan. Sukuna has been shown wearing a white kimono throughout the series. 🕊️
