Propolis is a very sticky substance and workers who gather propolis become hairless with time. It is because every time they bring it back to the hive, they have to pull it off their legs, which results in pulling out their hair.

Dombeyas are our winter favorite as a food source for π! They produce an amazing amount of nectar & pollen through almost all of the winter! Currently we have three varieties. This one is an early bloomer and will flower well into March! πππ

π―π use their antennae to touch & smell. When using smoke during hive inspections, it inhibits beesβ ability to detect the alarm pheromone, therefore making them less likely to sting & easier to handle. The smoke loses its effect within 10 minutes.

In the southern states, honey bee hives do not hibernate during the winter. The bees are actively searching for food. Wildflowers are the main source of food for bees during the winter months. Be thoughtful and avoid spraying! ππ

π are really good at math! They control colony caste numbers by building different size cells. Worker cells are 5 mm in diameter & drone cells are 6.25 mm in diameter. ππ measures the cell to know if she needs to lay a fertilized π₯ (female) or unfertilized π₯ (drone).
